Freezing temperatures in Texas can catch homeowners off guard—especially when we’re not used to prolonged cold weather. Unfortunately, frozen or burst pipes can lead to costly repairs, water damage, and major inconvenience.
At Jayco Handyman & Contracting Services, we see this happen every winter. The good news? A few simple steps can dramatically reduce your risk.
When Should You Start Worrying About Frozen Pipes?
As a general rule:
32°F and below – Start taking precautions
Below 28°F for several hours – Risk increases significantly, especially for older homes or pipes on exterior walls
Even short cold snaps can cause problems if pipes aren’t protected.
Simple Steps to Help Prevent Frozen Pipes
1. Drip Your Faucets
Letting faucets drip slightly helps keep water moving, which makes freezing less likely.
Drip both hot and cold lines
A slow, steady drip is enough—no need for a full stream
2. Open Cabinet Doors
Open cabinet doors under sinks, especially those on exterior walls. This allows warm air from your home to circulate around the pipes.
3. Pay Attention to Exterior Walls
Pipes located along exterior walls, garages, or poorly insulated areas are more vulnerable. These are often the first to freeze.
4. Disconnect Hoses and Cover Outdoor Spigots
If you haven’t already:
Disconnect all garden hoses
Install insulated covers on exterior spigotsThis is a small step that can prevent big problems.
5. Keep Your Home Warm
Even if you’re away, keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F to help protect plumbing throughout the house.
Signs Your Pipes May Be Frozen
Reduced or no water flow
Frost visible on exposed pipes
Unusual odors from drains
If you suspect a frozen pipe, it’s important to act quickly. Turning off the main water supply and calling a professional can help prevent a burst pipe.
