Something breaks, and suddenly you're stuck deciding: is this a "call someone right now" situation, or can it wait until next week? Getting that call wrong in either direction costs you — either paying premium emergency rates for something that could've waited, or waiting on something that actively gets worse by the hour. Here's a simple way to triage it.

True Emergencies: Call Immediately

These situations are actively causing damage or creating a safety risk, and waiting almost always makes them more expensive or dangerous:

Active water leaks — especially anything you can't stop by shutting off a local valve
Storm damage that compromises your home's exterior — a broken door, damaged fence panel exposing your property, or missing roof section
Broken locks or entry points — anything affecting your home's security
Electrical hazards — warm outlets, burning smells, or sparking
Structural instability — unstable stairs, railings, or ceiling sagging

Urgent, But Not Emergency: Schedule Within a Few Days

These need attention soon, but generally aren't actively worsening by the hour:

A toilet that won't flush (if you have another working bathroom)
A window that won't lock properly (if it can be temporarily secured)
A minor, contained drip under a sink
A garage door opener malfunction (if the door can still be manually operated)

Can Wait for Standard Scheduling

These are worth fixing, but there's no real cost to waiting a week or two for a standard appointment:

Squeaky doors or loose cabinet hardware
Cosmetic drywall cracks
Fence boards that are loose but not creating a security gap

The Simple Test

Ask yourself: is this actively causing damage right now, or creating a safety/security risk? If yes, it's an emergency. If it's simply annoying or cosmetic, it can typically wait for a scheduled visit — and you'll pay standard rates instead of emergency pricing.
